setCacheState_

Hi,

I cant find any explanation of setCacheState_ (on/off) function, but it tends to be used here and there, especialy in DXL Attributes and DXL Layouts.
Can anyone explain what does it mean? What is cached?

When Cache is set to ON, DOORS is supposed to repond better over a Wide Area Network.

Are you saying I should 'setCachedState_(on)' when I know the server is far away?

Not implying that at all. If you notice, I said, "suppose to". There has been people that claimed the setCachedState_ makes no difference -- but I didn't run their test.

You are welcome to test in your environment.

doors3667 has the correct understanding about this "hidden" DXL function. I once asked Telelogic what are the guidelines to use and not use this function. They refused to answer my question. Anyways, I did experiments using this function and couldn't find a strong case to use it just like the "eval" function.

The 'setCacheState_' function is intended to improve performance of layout DXL scripts. Since a layout DXL script is executed independently for each displayed object, there may be unnecessary operations performed. For example, a script that processes outlinks may cause the DOORS client to verify that the link and target modules still exist in the database. With 'setCacheState_(true)' or 'setCacheState_(on)', the existence of other modules is assumed to be unchanged (cached) while the layout DXL script is being executed. The layout DXL script should do a 'setCacheState_(false)' or 'setCacheState_(off)' prior to completion, so that subsequent database activities by other users will be detected.
